Shockwave Therapy
What Is Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to stimulate healing in injured tissues.
These sound waves promote:
- Increased blood flow
- Breakdown of scar tissue or calcifications
- Faster tissue repair
- Reduced pain
Treatments are done directly on the skin over the painful area. No injections, medications, or surgery are involved
How Does It Work?
Shockwaves create controlled micro-stimulation within the tissue, which triggers your body’s natural healing response. This can:
- Decrease pain by affecting nerve activity
- Increase circulation to the area
- Speed up the healing of chronic injuries
- Improve mobility and function
Most sessions take 5–10 minutes, and many patients feel improvement after 1–3 treatments, though a typical plan is 3–6 sessions depending on the condition.
What Conditions Does It Treat?
ESWT is commonly used for tendon, ligament, and soft-tissue injuries, especially when they have not improved with other conservative treatments.
Common conditions include:
- Plantar fasciitis & heel spurs
- Achilles tendinopathy
- Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee)
- Tennis elbow / golfer’s elbow
- Shoulder calcific tendinitis
- Proximal hamstring tendinopathy
- Hip trochanteric pain syndrome (gluteal tendinopathy)
- Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints)
- Chronic muscle tightness or trigger points
- Chronic ligament pain (e.g., ankle)
Pricing
- Shockwave is not covered by insurance. This is a self-pay treatment payable on the date of treatment
- $100 for 1 body part, $150 for 2 body parts
- $500 for package of 6 treatments to 1 body part
What to Expect During Treatment
- A handheld device delivers pulses to the target area.
- You may feel tapping or deep pressure sensations.
- Intensity is adjusted to your comfort level.
- No downtime—normal activities can be resumed the same day.
After Treatment
It’s common to feel:
- Mild soreness for 24–48 hours
- Temporary redness or swelling
These effects are normal and short-lived.
Avoid heavy or high-impact activity for the rest of the day after your session.
How Many Treatments Will I Need?
Most patients need 3–6 treatments, usually spaced about one week apart.
Chronic or severe conditions may require additional sessions.
Who Should Not Receive Shockwave Therapy?
Shockwave is not recommended for patients who:
- Are pregnant
- Have a pacemaker or certain implanted devices
- Have active infections or tumors in the treatment area
- Have a blood clotting disorder or are on strong anticoagulants
- Have open wounds at the treatment site
- Have cancer
- Over joint replacements
- Less than 6 weeks from cortisone injection
- Are under 16 years of age except for Osgood-Schlatter disease
Benefits of Shockwave Therapy
- Non-invasive
- No anesthesia required
- Quick sessions
- High success rates for chronic tendon pain
- Can reduce the need for injections or surgery
